Credibility

When the individuals who make up an organization have a genuine sense of credibility, you have real engagement!

Late last year I attended a Chicago SHRM Roundtable discussion on culture.  We’ve been discussing the idea that among the most important aspects of culture, as identified by employees, are these three:

  • Respect
  • Credibility
  • Fairness

Last month we focused on “Respect”.  In our work at Perspective-Power.com we have found that as important as it is to be respected, we have just as great a need as individuals to be able to respect others with whom we relate.

This month I’d like to talk about credibility.

With the Chicago SHRM Full Day Conference only days away, and with the theme of the conference being “Change,” here’s my take on credibility, with a special emphasis on the connection between Change and credibility.

You probably know that I work as an Executive Life Coach.  In that work I find that individuals often have a great deal of resistance to change because they are unable to see themselves as the person who has changed.  Their “personal credibility” prevents them from moving in the direction of the change that they desire, or want.  “That’s just not me,” needs to become “that’s exactly who I am” for change to take place, and stay!  That personal credibility must come from within.

An organization has the same resistance to change based on credibility that an individual has, only its impedance is added to, or multiplied by, the resistance and reactivity from individuals. “That’s not us,” must become “that’s exactly who we are.” This also must come from within. You cannot tell an individual or employee “this is who we are,” then behave differently! To believe that it is possible to do this with credibility is, well, incredible!

(I’ve said it many times: Behavior is the number one form of communication.)

When this happens — when the individuals who make up an organization have a genuine sense of credibility, the ability to look into the mirror and say “we are exactly who we say we are,” you have real engagement!  And isn’t that what we are all looking for, particularly and especially in times of change?

Until next time, be well!!
